intro to Djing course 1

Course overview

1 Hour Long Session Per Week In Person

Week 1 

  • Learn the background of the evolution of DJing, how it started, and where it’s going, so you can spot the trends. 

  • We will explore the various beat structures of popular EDM genres, and learn the ins and outs of mixing tracks together. 

  • Each student will get a hands-on feel for the vinyl turntable, DJ mixer, and prepare to drop their first vinyl beat.

Week 2

  • We will be focusing on a “hands on” approach in the DJ booth. Preparing for our first vinyl set, each student will have time working the turntables with the instructor’s guidance, preparing their tracks, getting a feel for beat matching, and having fun touching the music on vinyl.

  • Once you can lay down a short set of beat matched vinyl, we will finish the time to transition to a digital setup with a DJ controller and Traktor DJ software.

Week 3

  • We apply what you already know about the flow in the DJ booth, the DJ mixer, turntable, EQs, and effects, to apply to a digital DJ system. We’ll connect a DJ controller to a laptop with Traktor DJ software to learn the ins, and outs of Traktor.

  • You’ll get some hands on time with the instructor playing your favorite tracks in the music studio. The goal is to know the basics of the DJ booth, and speak the language of the DJ. 

Week 4

  • Learn basic music theory, song structure, and why certain songs sound better mixed together than others.

  • Learn & apply professional mixing techniques to your digital track library such as proper fader and techniques for blending different styles of music, and applying effects with a DJ controller to enhance transitions and blends. 

Week 5

  • Arrange cue points in your library and organize those cue points into sequences, and patterns. Create loops, and loop rolls based on these cue points. Develop playlists of songs around these sequence cue points, and build a routine that incorporates these elements. 

  • Review popular ways to DJ live stream sets online, the setup involved, and emcee best practices, so you’re not an awkward DJ. 

  • Learn where to find good music, how to organize music, and begin planning your very own 30 minute live stream DJ set. 

Week 6

  • Finalize your 30 minute DJ routine with professional guidance to create a unique recorded mix with your personal sound of your favorite music. 

  • Celebrate your hard work to record your video live stream DJ set, and share it with the world! Learn how to use the mix as a tool to get connected, and booked in your local community.
